OFFICERS' SHOULDER STRAPS

Bent, St. Vrain & Co. offers gold bullion shoulder straps for Officers whose
uniform buttons are gold

These shoulder straps are the smaller, pre-Civil War
types. Despite the change to a larger size, these appear
frequently in Civil War collections. Hand embroidered
with bright and dead gold bullion. In every case, the
border of the strap is to be the same color as the button
of the uniform. Bent, St. Vrain offers straps for Second
Lieutenant, First Lieutenant, Captain, and Major.
Note: The 1851 regulations changed the color of the
Major's straps. After 1851 the oak leaves were gold.

Although not authorized by regulations, topogs
are pictured during the Civil War wearing shields
on their shoulder straps to indicate staff position.
These copies are hand-embroidered in bright and
dead gold bullion with bright silver stars and are
meant to be pinned on the strap.
